Fencing Academy of Philadelphia: Philadelphia , PA Maitre d'Armes and 2x World Champion coach Mark L. Masters presents the first of a teaching series. Coaches should bring an athlete, clinic starts at noon and is 4-5 hrs. USFCA Members $90, non-members $120.

Maitre d'Armes and 2x World Champion coach Mark L. Masters presents the first of six teaching clinics.

1. October 4th. Theory of learning fencing, tactical wheel and flow charts. Discussion of methodologies and international systems. Group and individual lesson methods. Coaches prepare their understanding of blocked, serial, and random exercises, foreseen, partially foreseen, and unforeseen actions. Concepts of lessons without weapons. Recommended reading Szabo and the Master.

2. November 8th. Advanced footwork actions. Blade, footwork, distance, and tempo cueing options with discussion of tactical purpose of each. Additional considerations for group instruction work and the teaching efficiency of the coach. Line lessons, paired lessons.

3. December 13th Student led and initiated actions, weapon specific variations in cueing and technical development. Examinations for Moniteur group instruction and possible individual lesson exam depending on level of coach session work.


4. January 31st. Technical vs tactical series of actions in teaching. Offensive, and Defensive vs Counteroffensive decisions. Strip zone theory.


5. February 21st Different types of lessons, different types of learners. Matching your teaching to their needs and abilities.

6. April 3rd. Review of individual lesson material. Changing actions in modern fencing. Adapting the lesson to the prevailing referee decisions. Discussion of ongoing education for the coach and the need to attend more and higher level events with your athletes. Preparation for Prevot or Moniteur exams in a second or third weapon.

May 8th or 15th Examinations.


Coaches should bring an athlete and be prepared to share athletes; try to bring the same athletes from clinic to clinic so progress can be observed and feedback given, Clinics start at noon and run 4-5 hrs and will include brief review of previous material. Working lunch.
