Virginia Division Referee Clinic hosted by The Fencers Club is taught by Matthew Cox, Internationally licensed referee. The change of presenters is due to the prior scheduling conflict.

Matthew Cox is a Certified Referee Instructor from Durham, NC, and holds an international license in both sabre and epee.
Having specialized in sabre refereeing for almost 15 years, Matt has refereed at many Grand Prix and World Cup events, and has been a regular fixture at North American Cups. Matt has been both a club owner and coach, which informed his collaborative approach to referee education.
Matthew is a member of USA Fencing Referee Development committee.
Cost of the Clinic
The cost of the clinic is $75/person payable to The Fencers Club. Checks or cash must be paid at the door.
About the Referee Development Clinic
The Referee Development Clinic will provide you with a broad understanding of the role, responsibilities, and duties of a referee, as well as refine your sense of right of way, timing, and application of the penalties.
Attending an official FOC-sanctioned clinic is a prerequisite for becoming a certified USA Fencing referee, along with successful completion of a written exam. Once a passing score (90%) has been achieved on the written exam (both the general section and one or more weapon-specific sections) a referee receives a rating of "P" in each weapon passed. Further ratings improvements (1-10) can be obtained at a later date by being evaluated in a practical setting at tournaments.
