Biography of Coach Lightner:

Maestro Lightner received his first training in the art of fencing from Maîtres Roger Crosnier and Ewin Clarke in Great Britain whilst attending an all-boys boarding school. From there he went on and competed in foil, épée, and sabre in the UK. He achieved grade level 6 in all three weapons, granted by the Amateur Fencing Association (AFA), and received AFA Coaching Certification levels commensurate with Moniteurs d'Escrime and Prevost d'Armes. He also studied under British fencing Masters Frank Charnock and Henry De Silva.

His U.S. competitive fencing career spans the period of 1969-1984 where he actively competed individually and in team events at all levels, from Divisionals to Nationals. His American coach was Maestro Manny Forrest of Miami Springs, Florida. In 1972 his épée team beat Salle Santelli's team at that year's U.S. Olympic Trials.
He competed in 12 U.S. National Fencing Championships, earning an A-rating in épée and a B-rating in foil and sabre. He was an alternate épée fencer for our U.S. Olympic team in 1972 at the Munich Olympics.

In 1988 he received his Doctorate level pedagogic credentials from the United States Academy of Arms (USAA) through Cornell University under the tutelage of Maître Jean-Jacques Gillet. Maestro Lightner recently served as the Vice President of the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) and is on the coaching cadre for USA Fencing.
Maestro Lightner served on the staff of the USFA's Coaches College for video productions at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Every summer he spent one month at the OTC working with our U.S. Fencing Team and the rest of our Olympic coaching cadre. His vocational background in television has allowed him to make many instructional video programs for the USFA with Maestros Alex Beguinet, the late Ed Richards, and the late Michael D'Asaro, Sr. In 1988 Maestro Lightner worked with the US Fencing Team, and NBC to produce two Emmy award-winning video productions for the Seoul Olympics.
He traveled to Germany in 1990 to receive training in épée instruction from Meistern Emil Beck, Bundestrainer at the famous Tauberbischofsheim (TBB) the German national fencing academy. In 1991 Maestro Lightner was invited by Maestro Celso Dayrit to attend the 16th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Manila. He conducted workshops in fencing instruction in that developing country and assisted with F.I.E. Referee examinations.
In 2006 Maestro Lightner’s fencing team was invited to participate in the London University International competition in England along with 38 other teams.
His team won the London cup trophy that year.
He has taught and coached fencing at the University of Florida and at Santa Fe College, Florida.

He is starting his 61st year in the sport of fencing.
He is a level 2 USFA Armorer and enjoys armoring at NACs, Summer Nationals, World Cups and Grand Prix. He retired from formal coaching in 2009.
